On September 15, the IRS announced that it is extending tax filing and payment deadlines for taxpayers and businesses in North Carolina counties that were affected by Hurricane Florence and have been designated to qualify for FEMA. Currently, this only applies to parts of North Carolina, but taxpayers in other states will automatically receive these same filing and payment benefits as those states are added to the disaster area. The tax relief applies to certain tax filing and payment deadlines that occurred on Sept. 7, 2018, including quarterly estimated tax payments that were due on Sept. 17, 2018 and quarterly payroll and excise tax returns that are due on Oct. 31, 2018. The due date for these returns and payments is Jan. 31, 2019.

In addition, businesses who have a valid filing extension will have until Jan. 31, 2019 to file. This extension includes calendar year partnership returns that were due Sept. 17, 2018 and corporate returns that are due Oct. 15, 2018.
